The dhivehi term "Nakaiy" can either mean a group of stars, or it can refer to the divisions of the sidereal year which is used for predicting weather patterns in Maldives.

The period of time during which the Sun passed through a particular Nakaiy lasted about 13-14 days, and so this duration would be named after the corresponding Nakaiy, which allowed the Nakaiy system to serve as a calendar for our ancestors.

The Nakaiy system used to predict weather patterns in Maldives for generations is derived from the Sanskrit Nakshatra system.

Here are the names of the common 27 Nakaiy and their corresponding original Sanskrit names along with their translations, and their locations in the night sky.
